(Frequently Asked Questions)

How do I install a GDL object onto my local computer and get Archicad to recognize its location?
  • After extracting the GSM File (GDL object) from the ZIP file that was sent to you by email, place the GSM file either in an existing Folder on your computer or make a new Folder. The following example makes a new Folder called "Custom 12 GDL" in the C:\ root Folder using Windows Explorer in Windows XP. (Other versions of Windows will be similar in the way steps are taken to make a new Folder).

  • With your mouse over the Windows "Start" button, click your far right hand button. This should bring up a menu that looks similar to the following photo. Click on the "Explore" option.

  • Windows Start Menu

  • The Windows Explorer dialog box should appear and should look similar to the following.

  • Windows Explorer Starting View

  • Click on the + sign to the left of My Computer.

  • Click Plus Sign to Left of My Computer

  • Click on the + sign to the left of the "C" drive.

  • Click Plus Sign to Left of the C Drive

(*NOTE: When you click the + sign to the left of the "C" drive, in the right hand pane of Windows Explorer, it may give you a message that you cannot currently view the contents of the C Drive and gives you an option to view the Folders and Files on the C Drive. Click on the Link that allows you to display the Files and Folders of the C Drive).

  • Click on the C Drive so that it is highlighted, then go to the File menu in Windows Explorer and Click New, then Click Folder as shown in the following.

  • Click File -> New -> Folder in Windows Explorer

  • A Textbox with the phrase "New Folder" will appear in the Right-hand pane of Windows Explorer. In our example, we are using the Folder name "Custom 12 GDL", so remove the "New Folder" text and replace it with "Custom 12 GDL" (without the quotation marks), then press "Enter" on your keyboard.

  • Replace New Folder text with Custom 12 GDL

  • Take the GSM File that you extracted from the ZIP file and place it into the new Folder called "Custom 12 GDL". In this example we will use a file called QWGDL12-ShutterDog01.gsm. This File will show up in the Right-hand pane of Windows Explorer after you inserted the File into this Folder.

  • Place the GSM File in the Folder called Custom 12 GDL

Close the Windows Explorer dialog box and Open Archicad.

  • For this example, Archicad 12 will be used (other Versions of Archicad will be similar). When Archicad is open, click on the File menu, then click on "Libraries and Objects", then click on "Library Manager...".

  • Open Archicad and Open the Library Manager

  • The Library Manager dialog box should appear and should look similar to the following photo. 1.) Click on the "Local/Lan" tab at the top of the dialog box. 2.) Click on the Folder called "Custom 12 GDL". 3.) Click on the "> > Add > >" button. 4.) The Folder called "Custom 12 GDL" will show up in the Right-hand pane of the Library Manager dialog box. 5.) Click on the "Done" button.

  • Archicad Library Manager

  • Click on the Object Tool and the Object Default Settings dialog box will appear. Your new Folder named "Custom 12 Objects" will appear in the Folder View box and should look similar to the following.

  • Object Default Settings dialog box with new Folder

  • That completes the steps for installing a GDL object on our local computer and getting Archicad to find its location.
